Mark Cuban and “freemium” content plays

July 7, 2009

Mark Cuban always has interesting and brilliant insights on start-ups and the tech industry in general. He doesn’t disappoint with his deconstruction of free content business models. In particular, this is the qunadry facing the news industry right now. Everyone and their mom has been trained to expect and demand free news content online. If you want them to pay a subscription fee upfront they will laugh in your face.

Look at most of the other tech companies out there that rely on free services offered to the public at large. Google? Yahoo? Facebook? Right. Cuban goes on to explain how the top dog gets supplanted by a better innovator without fail. Microsoft and Google. MySpace and Facebook. Makes you wonder who will eventually break through Google’s current dominance.
